Our Mission
The mission of the Alexandria Assembly is to preserve, celebrate, and share the tradition of English country dancing. Through free, volunteer-led dance sessions welcoming people of all ages and experience levels, we foster inclusivity, community, friendship, and an appreciation for historic and modern English country dances, keeping this living tradition vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
The Alexandria Assembly
The Alexandria Assembly is a volunteer-run community of dancers who gather regularly to enjoy English country dancing, prepare for historic balls throughout the region, and share the tradition through demonstrations and performances at community events. Our dances are led primarily by Dancing Master Corky Palmer, together with Colleen Dougherty, who have been involved in historic dancing in Alexandria for many years.
History of English Country Dancing in Alexandria
English country dancing originated in 17th-century England and became a popular form of social entertainment in the American colonies and the early United States. In Alexandria, the tradition dates back to the 18th century. George Washington, an accomplished dancer, attended local balls as early as 1760 and, with Martha Washington, attended his Birthnight Balls at Gadsby's Tavern in 1798 and 1799. The Alexandria General Assemblies organized dances during this period, and dancing schools and social assemblies continued the tradition into the 19th century. Today, English country dancing remains a living connection to Alexandria's vibrant past.
